Having qualified for the UEFA Europa Conference League last season, Mainz have massively underwhelmed this season as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting third-from-bottom and in the relegation playoff place.

Augsburg begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting firmly ensconced in the middle-of-the-table. Early February is a bit early to suggest a team may be on the beach but, with 14 games to go, Augsburg do appear comfortably placed both clear of danger and adrift of European competition.
That said, things can change quickly and back-to-back victories ahead of this one may have them dreaming of Europe. Mainz come into this one on the back of an impressive 2-1 win at the Red Bull Arena away at RB Leipzig. That was their third victory in their last four matches after the appointment of Fischer.
