Liverpool Preview: Frustrating week
James Tarkowski scored a last gasp equaliser at Goodison Park to earn Everton a draw against Liverpool in what was the final ever Merseyside Derby at the famous old ground. The Reds have extended their lead to seven points now at the top-of-the-table.
That backed up a shock 1-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle in the fourth round of the FA Cup at Home Park last weekend as the rock-bottom team in the Championship managed to pull off a major upset courtesy of a 53rd minute Ryan Hardie penalty.
Wolves Preview: In the battle
Wolverhampton Wanderers come into this one on the back of an impressive and comfortable 2-0 defeat of Blackburn Rovers in the fourth round of the FA Cup last weekend at Ewood Park thanks to quick-fire goals from Joao Gomes and Matheus Cunha in the first-half.
Vitor Pereira’s side begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just two points above the bottom three and the relegation places with a crucial midlands derby victory against Aston Villa a couple of weeks ago lifting them out of the danger zone.
Liverpool Team News: Jones suspended
Curtis Jones received a red card in the aftermath of the derby in midweek so he is unavailable through suspension for the Reds this weekend, whilst Cody Gakpo has been described as a 'bit of a doubt' by Slot. Joe Gomez and Tyler Morton are the other confirmed absentees.
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Diaz; Jota
Unavailable: Gomez (Injured), Jones (Suspended), Morton (Injured)
Questionable: Gakpo (Injured)
Wolves Team News: A few doubts
Norway international striker Jorgen Strand Larsen was back training on grass ahead of last weekend's FA Cup clash with Blackburn but didn't feature in that fame. Boubacar Traore has retured to training from illness but remains a doubt for this weekend, whilst Hwang Hee-chan is also a doubt after suffering a hamstring injury last week.
Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Sa; Doherty, Agbadou, Toti; Semedo, Andre, Bellegarde, Ait-Nouri; Sarabia, Cunha; Guedes
Unavailable: Mosquera (Injured), Gonzalez (Injured), Kalajdzic (Injured)
Questionable: Traore (Illness), Hwang (Injured), Strand Larsen (Fitness)
Liverpool vs Wolves Prediction
Liverpool are expected to get their groove back at Anfield this weekend and they will not yet be missing Arne Slot, who was sent off at the end of the derby the other day, but remains allowed on the touchline until the appeal has been heard. They face a Wolves side that have put in better performances against the better or so-called ‘bigger’ sides in the Premier League since the appointment of Pereira. That means it may not be a real hammering but Liverpool should still ease to victory.
