Borussia Dortmund travel to a Hamburg side without a win in the Bundesliga since early October.

Hamburg preview: Backline leaking goals

It was another four goals conceded by Hamburg last time out which led to them falling to their third consecutive league defeat, this time at the hands of FC Cologne, who simply outclassed their fellow newly promoted side. The 2. Bundesliga champions won 4-1, a difficult result to take for last season’s second tier runners-up.

If Hamburg perform like they did in Cologne here, Dortmund will slice through them and enjoy a comfortable afternoon. Being back at the Volksparkstadion should at least give Hamburg a big boost and help inspire the players, who’ve struggled to contain their opponents now for the past few weeks.

Borussia Dortmund preview: Edging through

Victories by a goal to nil in back-to-back Bundesliga fixtures has kept Borussia Dortmund in the top four and still in the title hunt despite Bayern Munich refusing to do anything other than win. It was a different story though in Europe midweek as the German giants were taken down ruthlessly by Man City, who beat them by four goals to one.

Phil Foden has enjoyed success against Dortmund in the past and he was on the scoresheet twice, whilst former Dortmund striker Erling Haaland was on the scoresheet once again for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Hamburg team news: Two suspensions

With both Fabio Vieira and Immanuel Pherai banned, boss Merlin Polzin has somewhat of a headache. Balde and Omari also miss out, in their cases through injury.

Predicted XI: (3-4-3): Heuer Fernandes; Capaldo, Vuskovic, Elfadli; Gocholeishvili, Sambi Lokonga, Remberg, Muheim; Philippe, Poulsen, Dompe

Unavailable: Balde (Injured), Omari (Injured), Pherai (Suspended), Vieira (Suspended)

Borussia Dortmund team news: Late calls to be made

Niko Kovac faces a wait regarding the status of three players due to injuries. Defenders Ramy Bensebaini and Niklas Sule along with midfielder Julian Brandt are all doubtful.

Predicted XI: (3-4-3)Kobel; Anselmino, Schlotterbeck, Anton; Ryerson, Nmecha, Gross, Svensson; Adeyemi, Guirassy, Beier

Unavailable:

Questionable: Bensebaini (Injured), Brandt (Injured), Sule (Injured)

Hamburg vs Borussia Dortmund prediction

This could prove to be a long 90 minutes for Hamburg when considering their bad recent run of form, the low confidence that may start to be engulfing the dressing room and most importantly, the standard of their title chasing opponents.

Borussia Dortmund won’t find it easy away from home, but they’ve largely done well against the lesser opposition this season since that draw at St. Pauli on the opening weekend. Provided any complacency is left back in Dortmund, they should wind up too good here for Hamburg.
