It has been a breakthrough year for European and world youth champion Gian van Veen, and he was given a stern test in a high-quality tungsten tussle with Cristo Reyes in the first round.
The Dutchman averaged 98.91 in his 3-1 victory over Reyes, who posted a three-figure score of 96.16 himself, and he will now look to reach the third round for the first time in his young career.
Very much at a different stage of his career, Alan Soutar missed 15 match darts against Teemu Harju, and survived four of his own, before finally securing a 3-2 victory.
Soutar will not get away with such wastefulness in this contest, and we're expecting Van Veen to stamp his authority here.
