Genoa preview: Improvement under Vieira

Genoa come into this one on the back of a 2-2 draw with title challenging Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples last weekend. Romelu Lukaku gave Napoli the lead before Alex Meret’s own goal levelled things mid-way through the first-half.

Giacomo Raspadori then re-established Napoli’s lead in the 64th minute before Johan Vasquez equalised about 20 minutes later. Whilst an impressive result under Patrick Vieira’s impressive reign, they are now winless in their last five matches.

Atalanta preview: Atalanta’s UCL qualification

Coached by Gian Piero Gasperini, Atalanta confirmed their top four finish and UEFA Champions League qualification in Serie A last weekend with the Bergamasci defeating in-form Roma by two goals to one at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo last Monday.

Atalanta took a ninth minute lead via Ademola Lookman before Roma equalised via Bryan Cristante in the 32nd minute. Atalanta then snatched all three points in the 76th minute thanks to a strike from midfielder Ibrahim Sulemana.

Genoa team news: Several issues

The home team are dealing with several injury issues this weekend ahead of the visit of Atalanta. On-loan midfielder Fabio Miretti remains sidelined alongside Ruslan Malinovskiy, whilst Alan Matturro, Maxwel Cornet and Caleb Ekuban are all doubts.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Siegrist; Sabelli, Otoa, Johan Vasquez, Ahanor; Masini, Frendrup; Norton-Cuffy, Junior Messias, Vitinha; Pinamonti

Unavailable: Miretti (Injured), Malinovskiy (Injured), Balotelli (Out of favour)

Questionable: Matturro (Injured), Cornet (Injured), Ekuban (Injured)

Atalanta team news: Defensive absentees

As they make the trip to Genoa, Atalanta are dealing with several absentees in defence such as Isak Hien, who remains missing through suspension, alongside the likes of Stefan Posch, Giorgio Scalvini and former Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Carnesecchi; Kossounou, Djimsiti, De Roon; Bellanova, Pasalic, Ederson, Zappacosta; De Ketelaere, Lookman; Retegui

Unavailable: Hien (Suspended), Kolasinac (Injured), Posch (Injured), Scalvini (Injured), Juan Cuadrado (Injured), Scamacca (Injured)

Genoa vs Atalanta prediction

Genoa have been much-improved since the appointment of Vieira in the November international break but, surprisingly, that improvement has come as a result of being focused on the defensive side of things. They did perhaps show signs of becoming a bit looser last weekend, though. They now face an Atalanta side that have always been loose under Gasperini and also have plenty of defensive injury and suspension issues so both teams scoring may well be a good bet for this one at the Luigi Ferraris.
