Gabon are emerging as one of the stronger sides in Africa but they have begun with a defeat and most soon bounce back in the so-called ‘group of death’, Group F.

Gabon preview: Defeat for Gabon

Having run the Ivory Coast extremely close in African qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Gabon will be expected to push on during this next international cycle, but their CAF Africa Cup of Nations campaign has begun with a defeat.

Up against Cameroon at the Stade Adrar in Agadir the other day, the Gabonese went down by a goal to nil in their opening game. Levante striker Karl Etta Eyong notched the only goal of the game, early on, for the Cameroonians there.

Mozambique preview: Unfortunate Mozambique

Mozambique have themselves been improving in recent years but they have been extremely unfortunate with their AFCON draw this time around, having been pitted against Cameroon, the Ivory Coast and Gabon.

Mozambique, relatively predictably, began their AFCON group stage campaign with a defeat as the Ivorians edged past them at Stade de Marrakech the other day, courtesy of a winner scored by Manchester United man Amad Diallo.

Gabon team news: Early changes

Having been surprisingly left out of the eleven, both Mario Lemina and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came on after 33 minutes for Gabon and should both start this time around.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Mbaba; Oyono, Ecuele Manga, Moucketou-Moussounda, Ekomie; Openda, Ndong, Lemina, Averlant; Aubameyang, Boaunga

Mozambique team news: Unlikely to change

The best area of the Mozambique squad is defensively. They will want to be a bit more proactive this time around but there are no fresh injuries for this one.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Siluane; Diogo Calila, Mexer, Reinildo, Langa; Kambala; Catamo, Amade, Guima, Ratifo; Witi

Gabon vs Mozambique prediction

Gabon have a good squad and have been improving in recent years, unfortunate not to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup ahead of African champions the Ivory Coast. They now face a Mozambique side that have some good defensive personnel and pedigree, but lack much going forward. It is likely to be an attritional game of defence and attack but the Gabonese are expected to come out on top.

Gabon vs Mozambique tip: Gabon to win
