It’s a tall order, but Freiburg’s players no doubt believe that they can still reach the top six going into Sunday’s match with mid-team Union Berlin.

Freiburg preview: Leverkusen thriller

Freiburg in what has been a disappointing campaign so far may just be starting to corner, having put up consecutive wins and scoring six goals in the process. A 2-0 win over Heidenheim was followed up by a statement 1-4 triumph on the road at Union Berlin, lifting them out of the bottom three.

However, they remain positioned just above trouble and need to keep winning if they are to break away from the relegation pack with their opponents here, only one point behind them as it stands and boasting a superior goal difference.

Union Berlin preview: Turn for the worse

Results have taken a negative turn recently at Union Berlin, with three of their last four games ending in defeat. Whilst they are in 11th-place currently, Union are now just four points above the bottom three headed into the weekend’s action, so certainly not safe from relegation yet.

The most recent of their three losses was a mauling as Werder Bremen turned up in the capital and turned over Union, winning by four goals to one. Across their most recent four matches, Steffen Baumgart’s side are averaging two goals conceded per game.

Freiburg team news: Rosenfelder only confirmed injury absence.

Freiburg centre-back Max Rosenfelder misses out with a thigh injury but asides from him, Julian Schuster should have a full squad to choose from here.

Predicted XI: (4-2-3-1): Atubolu; Treu, Ginter, Lienhart, Makengo; Eggestein, Osterhage; Irie, Suzuki, Grifo; Matanovic

Unavailable: Rosenfelder (Injured)

Union Berlin team news: More than one suspension plagues squad

Union Berlin will be without two suspended players in Querfeld and Schafer, adding extra strain to their squad at a time when they are still battling for a European place.

Predicted XI: (3-4-3): Ronnow; Doekhi, Kral, Nsoki; Juranovic, Khedira, Kemlein, Kohn; Jeong, Ilic, Ansah

Unavailable: Leite (Injured), Querfeld (Suspended), Rothe (Injured), Schafer (Suspended), Skov (Injured)

Freiburg vs Union Berlin prediction

Freiburg remain almost flawless on their own patch over most of this season and Union Berlin become the next team to try and take them down. But that’s going to be a challenge when considering Union’s recent defensive struggles with them averaging two goals conceded per game through each of their last four.

That doesn’t bode well for them against a Freiburg side who under Julian Schuster have made good results a habit this campaign in the Black Forest. Whilst they themselves need to clean things up defensively, the hosts are in a good position to gain three points and backing Freiburg along with both teams to score is a play worth making.

Freiburg vs Union Berlin tip: Freiburg to win and both teams to score
