After being comprehensive taken down by Hoffenheim last week, Freiburg return home needing to respond strong against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Freiburg preview: Inconsistency bites

Julian Schuster’s side just cannot seem to put together a consistent run of positive results lately. They’ve now won two and lost two of their most recent four in the Bundesliga, following up victory over FC Cologne with a narrow defeat at Stuttgart and now a win against Werder Bremen with a 3-0 beating away to Hoffenheim, leaving them still well adrift of the top six.

However, those positive results have come at home and in the Black Forest, Freiburg are picking up points consistently. You have to go all the way back to August for the last time that Schuster’s men were beaten at home, having won 11 and drawn three of their most recent 14 home fixtures in all competitions since that loss at the hands of FC Cologne.

Borussia Monchengladbach preview: Nervous times

Borussia Monchengladbach will be starting to look over their shoulders very soon if they cannot arrest a current run of six Bundesliga fixtures without a win. The visitors have won just one of their last nine matches in the league, picking up just six points over that period and most recently being defeated 3-0 away at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Eugen Polanski is now under severe pressure and the Gladbach head coach couldn’t his disgust at what he saw in Frankfurt. His side cannot keep clean sheets and scoring goals has proven extremely difficult as well, with just two in their last five games. Hardly a recipe for success at this level.

Freiburg team news: Manzambi banned

Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi misses out for Freiburg due to suspension and Schuster will also be without Kubler, Kyereh, Lienhart and Rosenfelder due to injury.

Predicted XI: (4-2-3-1): Atubolu; Treu, Ginter, Ogbus, Gunter; Eggestein, Osterhagel; Beste, Suzuki, Grifo; Matanovic

Unavailable: Kubler (Injured), Kyereh (Injured), Lienhart (Injured), Manzambi (Suspended), Rosenfelder (Injured)

Questionable:

Borussia Monchengladbach team news: Key attackers out

Borussia Monchengladbach will have to make do without a number of players who could’ve proven big difference makers in attack such as Tim Kleindienst and Gio Reyna, whilst Reitz is suspended and Hack injured.

Predicted XI: (4-3-3): Nicolas; Scally, Elvedi, Diks, Ullrich; Castrop, Engelhardt, Stoger; Honorat, Tabakovic, Bolin

Unavailable: Hack (Injured), Kleindienst (Injured), Ngoumou (Injured), Reitz (Suspended), Reyna (Injured)

Questionable: Sarco (Injured)

Freiburg vs Borussia Monchengladbach prediction

If the pattern is to continue for Freiburg, then this should be a happy Sunday for them and you’d expect the hosts to triumph at Europa-Park-Stadion, where they’ve been so good over the course of the season. They’ll certainly dominate much of the possession against an opposition side clearly lacking confidence with no cutting edge in their forward play. Add in their struggles to snuff out the opposition offense and it doesn’t bode well for Borussia Monchengladbach.

Freiburg are more than good enough to capitalise on their opponents’ shortcomings and are unlikely to show any sort of complacency. Back on home turf, back them to return to winning ways at the first time of asking and in fairly comfortable fashion.
