Freiburg preview: Good start for Schuster
Julian Schuster’s first campaign in charge of Freiburg and the first season post Christian Streich was a successful one. To finish in fifth-place with 55 points and 16 wins from 34 cannot be sniffed. The disappointment from a Freiburg perspective was letting Borussia Dortmund overtake them late in the season and take the final Champions League spot after what had been such a poor year for the latter.
It's the Europa League for Freiburg in 2025-26 and that may have an adverse impact on their league form as we move into the fall. For now though, it’s all eyes on the Bundesliga and whether Schuster can take this team even further.
Augsburg preview: Coaching change
Augsburg ended last season in mid-table, finishing on 42 points and 12th place. After firing head coach Jess Thorup, Sandro Wagner was appointed as his successor and will be hoping to guide Augsburg through a campaign that doesn’t see them looking over their shoulders and thinking about relegation.
Winger Elias Saad has been brought in from St. Pauli, whilst French defender Cedric Zesiger has also arrived from Wolfsburg. Both cost multi-million Euro fees, so expectations for the pair will be high among the Augsburg support.
Freiburg team news: Adamu or Holer?
A big decision for Julian Schuster to make will be who starts up top between Junior Adam and Lucas Holer. Hofler is doubtful, whilst up to four players miss out through injury, including forward Daniel-Kofi Kyereh.
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Atubolu; Kubler, Ginter, Lienhart, Gunter; Eggestein, Osterhage; Dinkci, Manzambi, Grifo; Adamu
Unavailable: Kyereh (Injured), Matanovic (Injured), Rosenfelder (Injured), Treu (Injured)
Questionable: Hofler (Injured)
Augsburg team news: Saad in from start
New signing Elias Saad could make his Bundesliga debut as part of a front three that includes Mert Komur and Phillip Tietz. Injury rules out Alexis Claude-Maurice and striker Samuel Essende is suspended.
Predicted XI (3-4-3): Dahmen; Matsima, Gouweleeuw, Schlotterbeck; Wolf, Massengo, Jakic, Giannoulis; Komur, Tietz, Saad
Unavailable: Claude-Maurice (Injured), Essende (Suspended)
Questionable: Bauer (Injured)
Freiburg vs Augsburg prediction
Freiburg did have games last season which saw them struggle to score and also get caught out at the other end the pitch, particularly at home where opponents would sit back and make it as tough as possible for Julian Schuster’s men to break down them. That may well be the tactic of Augsburg here, knowing that they could cause problems on the counter-attack.
The likelihood is that Freiburg will enjoy most of the play and create the most opportunities to score. With home advantage in their favour as well, consider backing them to begin the new Bundesliga season with victory.
