THE PREDICTION

La Liga is back! It’s a clash of culture with the Andalusians of Sevilla travelling to the north to face Osasuna but, on a general note, unfortunately not a clash of styles in their play. La Liga has been, in some ways, blighted by an orthodoxy and focus on control. However, unlike the late-noughties Barcelona focus on control via possession, it has been the Cholismo style of the mid-2010’s and onwards that has been emulated by the rest of Spain. The effectiveness of dogged and determined football has meant Spain’s top-flight, and even second-tier, have been low-scoring. Osasuna’s 38 games last season saw them notch just 37 goals, with just 17 at home as they managed just five home wins. Sevilla remain under the management of Julen Lopetegui, fairly surprisingly. The former Spain boss has been criticised for a leaning to overly-conservative football that has potentially cost the club genuine tilts at the title. However, they have remained impressive in defence with enough talent up-front to win games and, especially win games to nil. Nearly a third of all of Sevilla’s matches, under Lopetegui, have seen them win to nil. Given Osasuna’s lack of goals and form in Pamplona last season, Sevilla winning to nil again looks a good bet for this one.
