Cristiano Ronaldo saved Portugal from what would have been an
acrimonious reaction from their supporters as his late double turned his
side’s game against Republic of Ireland on its head. His first of those
saw him become the leading international goalscorer of all-time but it
was his second that caught the headlines as he superbly hauled his side
to a victory from the jaws of defeat. Portugal backed that up with a 1-3
friendly win over Qatar at the weekend but now return to World Cup
qualifying action with a trip to Azerbaijan, a side with just one point
to their name from four matches. Ronaldo’s celebration of his second
goal saw him booked and subsequently banned from this contest but it
should not prevent the away side from winning this by at least two clear
goals.
