There have certainly been some high points for Daryl Gurney this year, not least his memorable World Cup of Darts win alongside Northern Irish compatriot Josh Rock, but by his own standards he he played a lot of average darts throughout 2025.
He may be ranked 22nd in the world, but it's fair to say that Gurney is not at the standard he was when he reached the semi-finals of the Premier League in 2019.
It shouldn't be forgotten, though, that 'Superchin' is a two-time PDC World Darts Championship quarter-finalist, and knows how to get it done on the Ally Pally stage.
It's unlikely that he will have played in a match like this though, with his first-round opponent Beau Greaves one of the most talked-about players at the worlds this year.
At the age of just 21, Greaves is indisputably the best female player on the planet, and she has already proven she can mix it with the men this year by reaching the fourth round of the UK Open and averaging over 100 against both Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson at the Grand Slam of Darts.
Perhaps her stand-out performance was when she posted a three-figure score of 105.02 in defeating Luke Littler in the semi-finals of the World Youth Championship in October.
Gurney is a class player and should not be underestimated, but we're taking a confident Greaves to make her way into the second round.
