MERVYN KING
- Mervyn King reached two World Championship finals during his time in the BDO but since switching to the PDC he has only gone further than the last 16 on one occasion – which was when he reached the semi-finals at the 2008-09 tournament.
- King has been involved in some epic matches in the early rounds in recent times at Alexandra Palace, and in fact each of his last five best-of-five sets matches at the PDC World Championship have gone to a deciding set.
- He has shown he is still more than capable of putting together a good run in the big tournaments having reached the quarter-finals at the World Matchplay, World Grand Prix and Players Championship Finals in 2019.
CIARAN TEEHAN
- Ciaran Teehan enjoyed a comprehensive 3-0 win against Ross Smith in his first ever match at the PDC World Championship on Sunday. Teehan averaged just over 90 and hit five 180s in the round one encounter.
- Teehan took the initiative by winning the first set in the decisive fifth leg with an 11-darter and crucially held his nerve to claim the second set – also in a deciding leg. The young Irishman put paid to any hopes of a Smith comeback by winning the third set.
- This not only Teehan’s first World Championship, it’s the first time he has competed in a PDC televised tournament, and although he reached quarter-finals of the World Masters on the BDO circuit in October, this is a whole new level.
THE PREDICTION
Mervyn King’s recent record at the PDC World Championship is not what you would expect from a player of his calibre, but having shown good form in some of the big TV events in 2019 he should be a big challenge for anyone who he encounters at this tournament. Teehan made a solid debut against Ross Smith but King is a much tougher opponent for the debutant and King’s proficiency on the outer-ring should propel him to the next round.
