THE LOWDOWN

SOUTH AFRICA

Coach: Rob Walter

Captain: Temba Bavuma

  • South Africa have quietly gone under the radar coming into this World Cup but despite a couple of injuries, they still possess an incredibly strong set of players that are easily capable of going all the way in India.
  • The batting order looks particularly strong and some of their key men like Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen are in arguably the best form of their careers. Combined with Quinton de Kock who signs off after this tournament, that area of the team looks formidable. The bowling however is going to have to produce if they are to go deep in the competition and they will look to make inroads into an average Sri Lankan batting line-up.

SRI LANKA

Coach: Chris Silverwood

Captain: Dasun Shanaka

  • The 1996 champions, Sri Lanka, kick off their 2023 Cricket World Cup campaign with a tough assignment and they do not come into this tournament in particularly good form having lost their last four warm-up matches to Afghanistan twice, Bangladesh and India.
  • With star man Theekshana out through injury and some key players like skipper Dasun Shanaka badly out of form, Chris Silverwood’s team is going to have to lift themselves out of the slumber if they are going to do well in India.

THE PREDICTION

There are clearly contrasting ambitions surrounding these two teams as many are tipping South Africa to do well in this edition of the World Cup while all the talk around Sri Lanka is full of pessimism. South Africa are clearly in better form as a unit and as individuals and barring the track in Delhi throwing any curve balls in, they should canter to victory against a poor Sri Lankan side.

BETTING TIP: South Africa to win
