These are two sides that appear likely for very different campaigns at opposite ends of the table as Colchester United prepare to take on Tranmere Rovers in Essex this week.

Colchester United appeared to have gone on such an impressive run in the second-half of last season that the top seven and the playoff places became inevitable, before falling away just at the very end. Now, still coached by former Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley, with his brother Nicky as assistant, the U’s should be even stronger this year.

They now face a Tranmere Rovers side that are continuing to have a fractured relationship between owner Mark Palios and the Super White Army fanbase, with Tranmere struggling last year and eventually only just steering clear of the bottom two and the relegation places, with another dog fight seeming likely for the Merseysiders.

Tranmere have struggled for a few years now, and Colchester will be confident of beginning their campaign with a scare free defeat of Rovers on the opening day.
