On the back of a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over Bayer Leverkusen, Union Berlin travel to out-of-form Borussia Monchengladbach full of confidence.

Borussia Monchengladbach preview: Slump continues

Borussia Monchengladbach slipped to their 11th league defeat of the season in the last round of Bundesliga fixtures, losing 2-1 to Freiburg. That extended their winless run to seven matches and sees them now in 14th-place and only two points above the bottom three. It’s been a miserable time for Eugen Polanski and his squad.

Gladbach were always going to find it tough in the Black Forest and after conceding first, it felt like a long way back. Freiburg doubled their lead in the second half but Gladbach at least deserve credit for fighting and pulled a goal back with five minutes to go, making things uncomfortable for Freiburg.

Union Berlin preview: Winless streak snapped

Whilst Borussia Monchengladbach’s run with victory continues, Union Berlin’s came to an end last weekend after an excellent, dogged 1-0 win against strong opposition in Bayer Leverkusen. Union took full advantage of a team perhaps a little fatigued following their Champions League exploits a few days earlier and shut them out in the German capital.

Unfortunately for Union, the result did little for their prospects of moving up the table but at least the top eight is now within site and that would be the first step in their goal to try to secure a place in Europe for next season.

Borussia Monchengladbach team news: No good news

Borussia Monchengladbach won’t be able to welcome back any of their notable injury absentees with the likes of Robin Hack, Tim Kleindienst and Giovanni Reyna all still out.

Predicted XI: (3-5-2): Nicolas; Takai, Elvedi, Diks; Scally, Reitz, Sander, Engelhardt, Ullrich; Machino, Tabakovic

Unavailable: Hack (Injured), Kleindienst (Injured), Ngoumou (Injured), Reyna (Injured)

Questionable:

Union Berlin team news: Ilic suspension forces change

Union Berlin are expected to bring Oliver Burke into the starting XI as a replacement for Ilic, who is out through suspension and Burke would form a front three alongside Jeong and Ansah.

Predicted XI: (3-4-3): Ronnow; Doekhi, Querfeld, Nsoki; Trimmel, Khedira, Kemlein, Kohn; Jeong, Burke, Ansah

Unavailable: Juranovic (Injured), Ilic (Suspended), Leite (Injured), Rothe (Injured), Skov (Injured)

Questionable: Haberer (Injured)

Borussia Monchengladbach vs Union Berlin prediction

Borussia Monchengladbach’s squad must be utterly drained of confidence at this point and playing at home can’t be easy when taking into account the presence of an understandably frustrated fanbase, who deserve better than their side fighting relegation, especially with the quality of players at their disposal. But it’s a very difficult hole to dig yourself out of and this is a Union Berlin side capable of blunting the Gladbach offense as they did with Leverkusen.

The blueprint is in place for Union Berlin who know that if they can restrict Gladbach from an attacking perspective, then they are likely to create some big chances of their own and a goal for them could quickly see heads drop within the home team. Utilising the double chance market represents a smart move, specifically backing either a draw or victory for Union.
