Borussia Dortmund preview: Important bounce back

Borussia Dortmund edged past FC Cologne by two goals to one on the road, keeping them 11 points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich. However, the gap is so big that it’s very hard to see any sort of miracle happening. Importantly though, Champions League football is looking all but guaranteed.

It represents a good response after losing 2-3 to the Rekordmeister the weekend prior, which essentially cemented Bayern’s place as the clear Bundesliga leaders. Now they return home with the expectation of three more points.

Augsburg preview: Winning streak ends

Augsburg’s three match winning run in the Bundesliga came to an end last time out, as they lost 2-1 away to RB Leipzig. Frustrating for the visitors, they led by a goal to nil in the first half and held it until the 76th minutes before Leipzig equalised.

But there was a sting in the tail as an Arthur Chaves own goal two minutes into second half injury team sealed a 2-1 victory for the hosts. That leaves Augsburg ninth-place in the table as it stands heading into the weekend.

Borussia Dortmund team news: Suspension rules out Bensebaini

Sule, Anton and Nico Schlotterbech should start as the back three with Bensebaini suspended, whilst Brandt likely faces a late fitness test after having been ill.

Predicted XI: (3-4-3): Kobel; Sule, Anton, Schlotterbeck; Ryerson, Sabitzer, Nmecha, Svensson; Brandt, Guirassy, Beier

Unavailable: Bensebaini (Suspended), Can (Injured), Mane (Injured)

Questionable: Brandt (Illness), Chukwuemeka (Injured)

Augsburg team news: Four out for visitors

Augsburg are set to be missing four players for this one, including both Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Chrislain Matsima.

Predicted XI: (3-4-3): Dahmen; Banks, Schlotterbeck, Zesiger; Fellhauer, Jakic, Massengo, Giannoulis; Rieder, Ribeiro, Claude-Maurice

Unavailable: Gouweleeuw (Injured), Keitel (Injured), Matsima (Injured), Ogundu (Injured)

Borussia Dortmund vs Augsburg prediction

Expect Borussia Dortmund to control much of this encounter but patience will be important for them as Augsburg try and make hard for the hosts to break them down. When taking into account the quality of players at the disposal of Niko Kovac, big chances should eventually fall to Dortmund across 90 minutes.

Whilst Augsburg will likely pose a threat themselves going forward, particularly with their pace on the counter attack. However, any outcome other than victory here for Borussia Dortmund would be seen as a surprise.
