Key stats

  • This is the first UEFA competition match between Bologna and Celtic.
  • Bologna’s sole previous UEFA meetings with a Scottish side came in the 1990/91 UEFA Cup, where they overcame Hearts 4-3 on aggregate in the second round. After losing 3-1 in Edinburgh, they produced a decisive 3-0 victory at home to turn the tie around.
  • Bologna are unbeaten in their last five UEFA Europa League matches (W3 D2).
  • Bologna have lost only two of their previous 30 UEFA competition home matches (W17 D11).
  • Celtic have won only two of their last 17 UEFA competition matches against Italian teams (D4 L11).
  • Celtic have lost only two of their last eight UEFA competition matches away from home (W1 D5).
  • Celtic are aiming to win successive away matches in a UEFA competition group stage/league phase for the first time.

Bologna vs Celtic prediction

Vincenzo Italiano’s Bologna come into this one on the back of a continuation of that aforementioned average form. They suffered a 2-1 defeat to struggling Fiorentina at the weekend to mean that they have managed just one win in their last nine matches inside 90 minutes across all competitions.

Martin O’Neill is back for his second stint as interim boss this season after the sackings both Brenden Rodgers and Wilfried Nancy, and results have improved once again for the Bhoys. They most recently eased into the fifth round of the Scottish Cup with a 2-0 win away at Auchinleck Talbot.

That victory for Celtic extended their winning streak to three matches since the departure of Nancy. That said, it is now a major step up in quality and Bologna are favourites.
