Bayer Leverkusen Preview: Mountain to climb

Everything that could possibly go wrong for Bayer Leverkusen, did go wrong on Wednesday night in their Champions League round of 16 first-leg clash away to Bayern Munich. Individual errors, a red card and ultimately losing 3-0, leaving them all but eliminated bar a miracle.

The second leg looms large next Tuesday but before that they must pick themselves up and focus on Bundesliga matters with this home clash against Werder Bremen. Xabi Alonso’s side are unbeaten in the league since August of last year.

Werder Bremen Preview: Losses piling up

Werder Bremen’s defeats are becoming all the more frequent with their last four league fixtures all ending in losses for Ole Werner’s men. Their most recent came at home to Wolfsburg last time out by one goal to two.

Conceding goals continues to be a huge issue for Werder, they have shipped at least two goals in all four of those losses and have now conceded 15 goals over the course of their most recent five matches in all competitions.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Werder Bremen Prediction

In a situation like this, Bayer Leverkusen would be considered vulnerable and there to be beaten after the disaster of midweek. But the champions have been fortunate enough that the fixture schedule has handed them an opponent in dire form, who simply cannot buy a point right now, let alone a win.

With the strength-in-depth at the disposal of Xabi Alonso, his squad is well-equipped to handle fixtures such as this and with the lack of confidence on the side of Werder, it’s still well worth backing Leverkusen to pick up three points.
