On the opening day of the campaign, Barnet, who won the National League last season, suffered a 2-0 defeat to Fleetwood Town after they had been knocked out of the EFL Cup in the preliminary round on penalties by Newport County. Those losses were then followed up by a 2-0 defeat to Bromley last weekend.
Walsall had seemed like an unassailable lead at the top-of-the-table in January, before the Saddlers collapsed and then eventually lost the playoff final to AFC Wimbledon. Mat Sadler has been allowed to rebuild this summer and they have started with a victory and a defeat before a penalty shootout loss to Stoke City in midweek.
Any sort of underwhelming performance will knock the confidence of Walsall, whilst Barnet require some confidence and fluency, so a low-scoring encounter is likely.
