The last and only time that Go Ahead Eagles had previously competed in the KNVB Cup final was all the way back in 1965 when they were beaten by Feyenoord. But 60 years later and they are back for a second crack at the trophy, with AZ Alkmaar the club standing in their way. Whilst the wait for cup glory hasn’t been as long for AZ, chances like this don’t come around very often and they’ll be desperate to secure their first silverware since winning this competition back in the 2012-13 campaign.
AZ have not been in good form of late but that goes out of the door in a final such as this. There are bound to be nerves on both sides and this may well wind up being a cagey contest, short of clear-cut chances for most of it as the two clubs ensure they don’t get exposed by their opponents on the counter attack.
