Augsburg preview: Thrashed on return

Augsburg couldn’t have asked for a worse way to start 2026 as they resumed their Bundesliga campaign. The winter break clearly didn’t have the effect Manuel Baum would’ve hoped as his side collapsed to a resounding 4-0 defeat away to Borussia Monchengladbach, a result which leaves them right in the thick of the relegation battle.

Union Berlin preview: Bad start costs them

Coming into the winter break on the back of consecutive league wins, Union Berlin would’ve been confident of a winning start to 2026 at home against a Mainz team inside the bottom three. However, a terrible showing saw them fall two goals behind at home and staring down the barrel of a really poor defeat.

But Union rallied to come away with a point, taking advantage perhaps of a lack of Mainz conviction to equalise in the 86th minute after having initially pulled a goal back with 13 minutes of normal time left to play.
