Augsburg preview: Munich miracle

No one gave Augsburg a chance at the Allianz Arena last Saturday as Manuel Baum’s side faced off against the runaway Bundesliga leaders who had won 16 and draw two of their 18 league games this season, racking up a mammoth 71 goals at the time. Even less so when Bayern Munich took an inevitable one-goal lead.

But Augsburg hung in there, never gave up and were rewarded in stunning fashion come the second half. Baum’s men stunned the hosts with two goals in six minutes and following an avalanche of pressure from Vincent Kompany’s side, who struck the woodwork late on, Augsburg survived to clinch a famous victory.

St. Pauli preview: A key point

Whilst St. Pauli may have failed to secure their first win since December 13th last time out, they came away extremely satisfied with their work, securing what could prove a vital point following a battling performance against Bundesliga heavy-hitters RB Leipzig which saw them rewarded in second-half stoppage time.

Trailing 0-1 as full-time approached, St. Pauli battled and were rewarded with a penalty at the death. Martijn Kaars converted and the hosts had their 93rd minute equaliser, shocking the visitors and making it consecutive draws for St. Pauli.

Augsburg team news: Jakic battling to feature

Augsburg midfielder Rexhbecaj is on standby in the event that Jakic fails to recover from a calf injury in time to play in this game. Gouweleeuw and Matsima are both out.

Predicted XI: (3-4-3): Dahmen; Chaves, Schlotterbeck, Zesiger; Fellhauer, Jakic, Massengo, Giannoulis; Rieder, Kade, Claude-Maurice

Unavailable: Gouweleeuw (Injured), Matsima (Injured)

Questionable: Jakic (Injured)

St. Pauli team news: Suspension rules out Dzwigala

Dzwigala won’t feature at the back for the visitors as he is suspended, whilst Metcalfe, Nemeth and Hountondji are all missing through injury.

Predicted XI: (3-4-3): Vasilj; Ando, Wahl, Mets; Pyrka, Sands, Smith, Oppie; Fujita, Kaars, Jade-Jones

Unavailable: Dzwigala (Suspended), Hountondji (Injured), Nemeth (Injured), Metcalfe (Injured)

Augsburg vs St. Pauli prediction

Both these two teams will have taken massive confidence from their respective most recent results in the Bundesliga. To have beaten Bayern Munich is a massive achievement for Augsburg and when taking into account St. Pauli’s struggles this season, to come away with a point against RB Leipzig is no mean feat.

That should lead into an entertaining battle when taking into account the momentum of both sides and that the fact that they’ll each see this is an eminently winnable fixture. Expect action at both ends of the pitch and backing both teams to score for the fourth consecutive Augsburg fixture warrants serious consideration.
