Augsburg preview: Struggling Augsburg

As they head into the second-half of the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign, Augsburg begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just outside of the bottom three and the danger zone with just four victories in their 17 matches so far this season.

The home team come into this one on the back of a four-match winless run of form either side of the mid-season winter break, most recently sharing a 1-1 draw with a strong Union Berlin side, conceding a second-half stoppage-time equaliser.

Freiburg preview: Multiple fronts for Freiburg

Julian Schuster did very well to quality Freiburg for the UEFA Europa League last season but the visitors have struggled to deal with the intensity of that league phase and the Bundesliga but they do remain tucked inside the top-half of the table.

The inconsistent visitors most recently suffered a 2-0 loss to RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena the other day due to second-half goals scored by Hungary international centre-back Willi Orban and Brazilian striker Romulo.

Augsburg team news: Defensive injuries

Augsburg have to deal with a couple of defensive injury issues this weekend ahead of the visit of Freiburg as both Chrislain Matsima and Jeffrey Gouweleeuw are sidelined.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Dahmen; Banks, Schlotterbeck, Zesiger; Fellhauer, Jakic, Rexhbecaj, Giannoulis; Kade, Claude-Maurice; Gregoritsch

Unavailable: Matsima (Injured), Gouweleeuw (Injured)

Questionable:

Freiburg team news: Fresh doubts

Freiburg have a couple of fresh injury doubts for this weekend as Matthias Ginter is potentially sidelined alongside Austria international full-back Philipp Lienhart.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Atubolu; Kubler, Ogbus, Jung, Gunter; Eggestein, Osterhage; Treu, Suzuki, Manzambi; Holer

Unavailable: Kyereh (Injured)

Questionable: Ginter (Injured), Lienhart (Injured), Rosenfelder (Injured)

Augsburg vs Freiburg prediction

The German top-flight is a very entertaining and high-scoring league in European football. However, the bottom five sides, perhaps not by coincidence, are the lowest scorers. Augsburg have scored 18 goals thus far. Freiburg are one of the more reactive top-half teams, too, but even then they have scored 27 and conceded 29. Freiburg are slight favourites for a game that should be on the lower scoring side.

Augsburg vs Freiburg tip: Double chance – Freiburg to win or draw & under 3.5 goals
