Augsburg preview: Hosts with dreams of their own

Whilst all the attention may well be on Bayern Munich, Augsburg can draw level with the German champions by beating them here at home. That will be a tall order but Augsburg know all about that. It was they who denied Bayern an unbeaten league season in 2025-26 by pulling off a stunning victory at the Allianz Arena.

It’s been a good start to the new campaign for Manuel Baum’s side, who have registered seven points. However, the international break arguably came at a good time for them, having lost their last match away to Werder Bremen.

Bayern Munich preview: Catching Dortmund

With Borussia Dortmund playing on Friday night, Bayern Munich will need to wait before they know if they stand a chance of going above them at the top of the table with a win at Augsburg. Vincent Kompany’s side have picked up ten points from a possible 12 so far, slipping up against Schalke 04 to leave them playing catch-up.

But there’s no need for panic with it being a long season and Bayern remain the highest scorers currently in the Bundesliga, averaging three and a half goals per game so far. The big question is whether Kompany gives any key players a rest following the international break.

Augsburg team news: Breithaupt wait

Breithaupt is doubtful with a toe issue, whilst Banks, Mounie, Sakar and Suso are all expected to miss out for Augsburg with the quartet all suffering from different injuries.

Predicted XI (3-4-3): Dahmen; Matsima, Gouweleeuw, Brackelmann; Wolf, Massengo, Rieder, Behrens; Fellhauer, Gregoritsch, Claude-Maurice

Unavailable: Banks (Injured), Mounie (Fitness), Sakar (Injured), Suso (Injured)

Questionable: Breithaupt (Injured)

Bayern Munich team news: No Musiala

A hamstring injury sidelines Jamal Musiala, so Ismael Saibari may get the start as Kompany is expected to go as strong as possible with Michael Olise and Harry Kane both in following goal-laden international breaks.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Laimer, Upamecano, Tah, Brown; Kimmich, Pavlovic; Olise, Saibari, Diaz; Kane

Unavailable: Musiala (Injured)

Questionable:

How many goals will Harry Kane score in this match?

Augsburg vs Bayern Munich prediction

Each of the last eight showdowns between these two clubs have seen over 2.5 goals scored and it would be remiss not to expected another high-scoring game when considering the fearlessness of Augsburg and the desperation of Bayern Munich to win at all costs. Despite their good start, Augsburg have not kept a clean sheet since the opening round of Bundesliga fixtures.

Bayern should take advantage of a shaky Augsburg backline and you expect a striker in the form of Kane to have his say at some point. Ditto Olise, who has enjoyed a spectacular year for club and country. In the end, expect Bayern to have found a way once again come the final whistle.

Augsburg vs Bayern Munich tip: Bayern Munich to win and over 2.5 goals
