Atletico Madrid preview: A sigh of relief

In midweek, Atletico Madrid managed to hold on to an aggregate victory over Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey with Los Rojiblancos winning the first-leg 4-0 at the Metropolitano before then succumbing to a 3-0 loss at Camp Nou in midweek.

Diego Simeone’s side are keeping their season very much alive as they also prepare for a UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie against a Tottenham Hotspur side that are battling against relegation from the Premier League in midweek.

Real Sociedad preview: Impressive La Real

Real Sociedad come into this one on the back of a 1-0 defeat of arch-rivals Athletic Club in the second-leg of that Copa del Rey tie, completing a 2-0 aggregate victory over their fellow Basque giants and make their way into the final.

La Real have been much-improved since the appointment of Pellegrino Matarazzo over the mid-season winter break, with that win meaning that they have suffered just one defeat in their last 15 matches across all competitions.

Atletico Madrid team news: Couple of doubts

Pablo Barrios is working his way back to full fitness after a thigh injury but now Giuliano Simeone, son of Diego, has picked up his own knock ahead of this one.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Oblak; Marcos Llorente, Marc Pubill, Hancko, Ruggeri; Alex Baena, Johnny, Koke, Lookman; Sorloth, Julian Alvarez

Unavailable:

Questionable: Pablo Barrios (Injured), Giuliano Simeone (Injured)

Real Sociedad team news: Key injuries

Real Sociedad head to the Spanish capital city with right-back Alvaro Odriozola a confirmed absentee alongside young midfielder Inaki Ruperez and Japan international winger Takefusa Kubo.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Alex Remiro; Jon Aramburu, Jonas Martin, Igor Zubeldia, Sergi Gomez; Jon Gorrotxategi, Benat Turrientes; Guedes, Carlos Soler, Ander Barrenetxea; Mikel Oyarzabal

Unavailable: Alvaro Odriozola (Injured), Inaki Ruperez (Injured), Kubo (Injured)

Questionable:

Atletico Madrid vs Real Sociedad prediction

Diego Simeone won the Copa del Rey early on in his Atletico Madrid reign but a 13-year wait for the trophy could now be ended again, in what may well be his final season at the Metropolitano. Real Sociedad will be aware that Atleti’s focus can and may well slip from La Liga action, at least in the immediate aftermath of that mentally and physically sapping clash with Barca the other day, and siding with the in-form visitors may well be the way to go for this one.

Atletico Madrid vs Real Sociedad tip: Double chance – Real Sociedad to win or draw
