We have something of a local derby taking place at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo as a faltering Atalanta side take on impressive newly-promoted Sassuolo this weekend.

Atalanta preview: Big win in Europe

Atalanta head into the visit of Sassuolo on the back of a hard-fought 1-0 defeat of Olympique de Marseille in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League, courtesy of a stunning but late and controversial winner scored by Lazar Samardzic.

The departure of the entertaining Gian Piero Gasperini led to the appointment of the dull and dour Ivan Juric, and the Bergamasci have been tough to watch in Serie A with just two domestic victories so far this season.

Sassuolo preview: Strong start for Sassuolo

Following their promotion to the top-flight last season, Sassuolo took the decision to stick by manager Fabio Grosso and the visitors have been impressive at the start of this season with what is a strong squad that shouldn’t have been in Serie B.

The visitors do head into this one on the back of a surprise 2-1 defeat at home to a Genoa side that had just sacked Patrick Vieira with Ukraine international Ruslan Malinovskiy scoring a second-half stoppage-time winner.

Atalanta team news: Brescianini a doubt

Exciting attacking midfielder Marco Brescianini is now a doubt for this weekend, whilst Giorgio Scalvini is working his way back to full fitness and Mitchel Bakker remains sidelined.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Carnesecchi; Kossounou, Hien, Djimsiti; Zappacosta, Ederson, Pasalic, Zalewski; Samardzic, Sulemana; Scamacca

Unavailable: Bakker (Injured)

Questionable: Scalvini (Injured), Brescianini (Injured)

Sassuolo team news: Several issues

Sassuolo are dealing with plenty of issues for this one as Cristian Volpato is now a fresh doubt alongside Danish attacker Lukas Skjellerup, with the likes of Filippo Romagna, Daniel Boloca and Edoardo Pieragnolo still sidelined.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Muric; Walukiewicz, Idzes, Muharemovic, Doig; Thorstvedt, Matic, Kone; Berardi, Pinamonti, Lauriente

Unavailable: Romagna (Injured), Boloca (Injured), Pieragnolo (Injured)

Questionable: Skjellerup (Injured), Volpato (Injured)

Atalanta vs Sassuolo prediction

With Ivan Juric at the helm, Atalanta have essentially disregarded their fun and thrilling style of football to become naturally more controlled and cautious. The Bergamasci will be pleased with their win in midweek but it is hardly a sustainable blueprint. They face a Sassuolo side that have an abundance of attacking options that can hurt an Atalanta side trapped in inertia and so siding with a surprise away win would seem good value.

Atalanta vs Sassuolo tip: Double chance – Sassuolo to win or draw
