Quillan Salkilld: The UFC's "Newcomer of the Year" for 2025 looks to make a statement to begin 2026

Recently crowned as the promotion’s “Newcomer of the Year” for 2025, Quillan Salkilld (10-1) announced himself on MMA’s biggest stage by brutalizing India’s Anshul Jubli with a 19 second KO in his UFC debut. A multiple time champion on the regional circuit, the 26 year old Aussie would follow up his impressive Octagon bow with a decision victory over Yanal Ashmouz before scoring the win that really introduced him to the masses. Matched up against perennial tough out Nasrat Haqparast at UFC 321, Salkilld produced one of the most brutal finishes of the year with a murderous first round head kick, sending his opponent to the shadow realm and earning himself his second Performance of the Night bonus to boot. Did you know that his parents own a bakery?

Jamie Mullarkey: Can the Aussie veteran defy the odds and reel off a second consecutive victory?

Entering this contest with a UFC record of 6-6 since joining the promotion in 2019, Jamie Mullarkey is as battle-tested as they come at 155 pounds. A solid boxer with decent wrestling chops, it's hard to believe that Mullarkey is only 31 at this point in proceedings - he was facing Alexander Volkanovski for a regional title all the way back in 2016! Said perception of the Aussie may have something to do with the sheer amount of damage he's accrued over the years. In addition to getting flatlined by Volk more than a decade ago, Mullarkey has been brutally knocked out in all but two of his UFC defeats to date, losing to ferocious finishers in the vein of Jalin Turner and Mauricio Ruffy. Nevertheless, he enters this contest off the back of his first win since 2023, serving Rolando Bedoya his walking papers with a hard fought decision victory in September 2025.

Quillan Salkilld vs Jamie Mullarkey prediction

Put together after Salkilld’s original opponent Rongzhu pulled out with an injury, this is absolutely diabolical matchmaking. Despite entering this contest following his first win since 2023, Mullarkey has already been knocked out six times in eight professional defeats, while Salkilld is coming off a KOTY contender over Nasrat Haqparast - a fighter who just happens to own a brutal knockout win of his own over the 31 year old Aussie.

Salkilld isn’t just a knockout artist either. The mustachioed prospect also has a nasty submission game to back up his lethal striking; he was actually regarded as more of a threat on the mat than on the feet prior to debuting in the UFC. Even at this young point in his career, he was arguably due more of a step up in competition than even Rongzhu would have presented. As such, it’s hard to escape the sensation that the 26 year old wins this fight pretty much any way that he likes.

Mullarkey is always game, but a win over the 0-4 Rolando Bedoya isn’t enough to convince me that he has what it takes to upset one of the lightweight division’s foremost blue chip prospects. Salkilld lands something murderous in the early stages to score another highlight reel KO and begin banging on the door of the Top 15 in earnest.

Prediction: Quillan Salkilld to win by first round KO
