This is a fascinating contest at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Tottenham come up against Newcastle United in North London, with both sides in so-called ‘transition’.

Tottenham preview: De Zerbi’s bizarre start

After keeping Tottenham up on the final day of last season, there was an expectation that Spurs would hit the ground running under Roberto De Zerbi this time around but they instead put in one of their worst performances in recent years on the opening day.

In a London derby against Brentford, Spurs capitulated to a 3-0 loss to The Bees, fortunate it wasn’t four with an Igor Thiago missed penalty. They will aim to completely shake that off but there is a concern that it could well be a sign of more of the same from the North Londoners.

Newcastle preview: Jaissle’s energetic opening

Mid-way through pre-season, Eddie Howe departed Newcastle and was eventually replaced by former Red Bull Salzburg boss Matthias Jaissle, who has won back-to-back AFC Champions League titles with Al Ahli in the last couple of seasons.

Jaissle is in charge of a much-changed Newcastle side that have spent big this summer and they were as energetic as one might expect as they went 1-0 and then 2-1 up against Liverpool before a late Dominik Szoboszlai penalty denied them three points.

Tottenham vs Newcastle prediction

In midweek, Spurs hammered Charlton Athletic by five goals to one in the second round of the EFL Cup, while Newcastle edged through an entertaining tie against West Bromwich Albion by three goals to two. Those ties may not be massively important for the rest of their season but they do perhaps suggest entertaining and open styles of football being implemented by their respective coaches and so both teams scoring does seem a very decent bet for this one.
