Tottenham preview: Goalless Spurs
Tottenham Hotspur spent heavily over the summer to back Roberto De Zerbi in his first full season in charge after the Italian had led Spurs to survival on the final day of last season but it has been a woeful start for the 2025 UEFA Europa League winners.
After back-to-back defeats to Brentford and then Newcastle United, Spurs have since shared goalless draws with Nottingham Forest and Everton before a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in the third round of the EFL Cup at Anfield in midweek.
Aston Villa preview: Winless Villa
Like Tottenham, Aston Villa are also winless in the Premier League but they have at least scored with Alysson notching in The Villans’ 2-1 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest in Birmingham last weekend.
Villa managed to overcome Coventry City by three goals to one in midweek, though, earning a second win of the season across all competitions, having also beaten Club Brugge away from home in the UEFA Champions League.
Tottenham team news: Key doubts
Pedro Porro was ruled out of the game against Everton last week and remains a doubt with Sandro Tonali missing through injury for their cup game against Liverpool in midweek.
De Zerbi is still working out his best eleven. Conor Gallagher may well drop into a deeper role alongside Rodrigo Bentancur and ahead of Mateus Fernandes to accommodate James Maddison in the attacking midfield position.
Further details will appear here following pre-match press conferences…
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Kinsky; Gray, Van Hecke, Van de Ven, Robertson; Gallagher, Bentancur; Savio, Maddison, Tel; Solanke
Unavailable: Simons (Injured), Kulusevski (Fitness), Mudryk (Injured), Odobert (Injured)
Questionable: Porro (Injured), Tonali (Injured)
Aston Villa team news: Defensive injuries
Pau Torres and Ian Maatsen were both forced off against Nottingham Forest last weekend and both are expected to be sidelined for a while according to Unai Emery.
Joao Gomes has now returned from suspension after being sent off on the final day of the season. Despite a brace in midweek, it would be a surprise to see Tammy Abraham replace Nicolas Jackson up-front in the league.
Further details will appear here following pre-match press conferences…
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Suzuki; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Mings, Ruggeri; Kamara, Gomes; McGinn, Buendia, Hemmings; Jackson
Unavailable: Torres (Injured), Maatsen (Injured), Goretzka (Injured), Onana (Injured)
Questionable: Cash (Injured), Madjo (Injured)
Tottenham vs Aston Villa prediction
Prior to Spurs’ goalless draw with Forest, Oliver Glasner suggested that he, and presumably others, had figured out the style of football of De Zerbi and there are concerns that the former Brighton and Hove Albion boss may well already be doubting the quality of his squad, too. Villa have at least won, both on the road, and siding with the visitors to send Spurs winless into the international break seems a decent bet. Some risks may well be taken from both sides to avoid the ignominy of going winless into mid-October.
