THE PREDICTION
World number 11 Daria Kasatkina is in her element on clay, where what she lacks in a powerful first serve of her own she can counter-punch her opponents’ power more effectively, and she should be considered a dark horse for the last four after an impressive straight-sets win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The 26-year-old finished runner-up to the unstoppable force of Danielle Collins at the Charleston Open earlier this month, where she won her first of six WTA titles in 2017, and she reached the semi-finals at Roland-Garros in 2022 to prove her credentials on this surface but Yulia Putintseva also thrives in these conditions.
29-year-old Putintseva moved back up to world number 50 after a surprise return to form across the Sunshine Double and she made it three Masters-level last 16s on the spin with a consummate victory over Caroline Dolehide on Sunday. Kasatkina won their only previous encounter in straight sets at Wimbledon way back in 2018 to make this as good as a first encounter, particularly on their favoured surface. Back Kasatkina to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors to leave this one up to chance.
TIP: DARIA KASATKINA TO WIN A SET
