25-year-old Yue Yuan set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 49th after winning her maiden title at the Austin Open on Sunday, beating fellow Chinese Xiyu Wang in straight sets. Wins over the likes of Taylor Townsend and Yafan Wang back up Yuan’s solid form but, as Katie Boulter proved on Wednesday, it is notoriously hard to reset from the emotional highs of a career milestone to play in the first round of a new tournament so soon. World number 68 Varvara Gracheva brings a really sorry five-match losing streak into Indian Wells but the 23-year-old is capable of much better tennis than her current deflated ranking suggests. It is tough to see where Gracheva’s blip will end, although she is handy on the natural surfaces, but consider taking the Frenchwoman to earn at least a set from this first encounter to guard against a capitulation by Yuan.
