THE PREDICTION
Former world number six Gael Monfils, French number one for many years, will face the newest man to hold that title in what could prove to be a thrilling, good-natured battle here. 37-year-old Monfils won the Stockholm Open late last season to prove he is still a serious threat in hardcourt conditions on tour but Humbert has won both of their previous encounters, albeit by retirements, to look the favourite to edge through. 25-year-old Humbert won his fourth ATP title at the Marseille Open earlier this month and he bounced back from an early Rotterdam exit with a consummate victory over Pavel Kotov on Wednesday here in Doha. Monfils has looked in excellent shape in recent weeks, though, with a three-set exit to Jannik Sinner in Rotterdam last week and an excellent comeback over Zhizhen Zhang here yesterday. World number 18 Humbert should be coming through this clash in straight sets, at his best at this stage of their careers, but an outright call would be the sensible move.
TIP: UGO HUMBERT TO WIN
