THE PREDICTION
33-year-old Arantxa Rus finally won her maiden WTA title at the Hamburg Open last summer, after a long and steady presence on tour, and she looks well capable of breaking the top 40 for the first time this year if she can maintain her solid form. Fellow veteran Tatjana Maria is also targeting a first foray into the top 40 this season, currently ranked four places behind her career-high of 42nd, but she has struggled to find consistent performances for some time with her last back-to-back wins coming last September at the Guangzhou Open. Rus brings a three-match losing streak from her run to the quarter-finals of the Transylvania Open this time last month but she arguably has the better results this season overall, with Maria’s shock win over Leylah Fernandez last time out coming via an injury. The pair have never met at tour level, and not at all since 2016, so back Rus to win at least a set with the better recent wins this season.
