THE PREDICTION

World number one Iga Swiatek looks hellbent on winning the United Cup for Poland this week, conceding just 12 games over three singles matches so far and proving the difference in both of her doubles matches. The 22-year-old ended 2023 in fearsome style, returning to the top of the sport at the WTA Finals after back-to-back titles in Cancun and at the Beijing Masters before that, and she should be considered the favourite amidst a huge crowd of contenders for the Australian Open in two weeks’ time.

World number 20 Caroline Garcia took Swiatek all the way in a very tight quarter-final in Beijing last October but it was a third defeat to the Pole on hardcourts our of three to trail 1-3 in their head-to-head. The 29-year-old has been the lynchpin of France’s success this week, winning all three of her singles matches and both of her doubles matches like Swiatek albeit in much tighter fashion. Each of Garcia’s singles matches have needed a decider this week, even to Norway’s severe underdog Malene Helgo, to suggest Swiatek will have too much for her here. Back the Pole to win outright.

TIP: IGA SWIATEK TO WIN
