THE PREDICTION

21-year-old Peyton Stearns will break the top 60 on tour for the first time after stunning former Roland-Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko in three sets on Wednesday and she could move inside the top 40 with victory here. The American will face a totally different player in world number nine Daria Kasatkina, though, who prefers precision over Ostapenko’s favoured brute force. 26-year-old Kasatkina reached the semi-finals here last season before defeat to eventual champion Iga Swiatek but she has gone under the radar in Paris so far after enduring a hugely erratic 2023 season so far. The Russian is at her best on clay, though, and she looked in excellent form against former finalist Marketa Vondrousova on Wednesday. Stearns has played well enough on clay this season, not just here in Paris, to warrant real caution here but Kasatkina should be coming through the outright winner as a genuine outside contender at Roland-Garros.
