THE LOWDOWN

ONS JABEUR

World number seven Ons Jabeur staged a stunning comeback win over Maria Sakkari on Friday, beating the Greek in three sets from a set and a break down. The 27-year-old is riding a 10-match winning streak now after winning her first Masters 1000 title last week at the Madrid Open via some huge results over the likes of Belinda Bencic, Simona Halep and Jessica Pegula in the final. Jabeur won her first WTA title last summer at the Birmingham Classic on grass, beating Daria Kasatkina in the final.

DARIA KASATKINA

World number 23 Daria Kasatkina was in control of her quarter-final match with in-form Jil Teichmann on Friday before the Swiss was forced to retire in the second set. 250-year-old Kasatkina set a career-high WTA world ranking of 10th back in 2018 after reaching back-to-back Grand Slam quarter-finals at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon. The Russian is an excellent all-courter but she has a penchant for the clay, on which she won her first of four total WTA titles at the 2017 Charleston Open.

THE PREDICTION

Daria Kasatkina has beaten some top quality players this week, most impressively the second seed Paula Badosa in the round of 16, and she will be a serious threat to Ons Jabeur’s excellent winning streak. However, Jabeur’s comeback victory over world number four Maria Sakkari is proof of a serious resolve to make the very most of the best form of her career and she only recently beat Kasatkina on clay at last month’s Stuttgart Open. In fact Jabeur has won the last three meetings with Kasatkina, including the Birmingham Classic final last summer, to lead the Russian 3-2 and backing her to extend that lead as the outright winner here looks reasonable.
