THE LOWDOWN

MARIN CILIC

World number 23 Marin Cilic conceded just three games to Alexei Popyrin on Saturday. The 33-year-old is enjoying a renaissance later in his career with his first title in three years won at the Stuttgart Open followed closely by 20th overall title at the St. Petersburg Open. Cilic won the US Open in 2014 to set a career-high ATP world ranking of third and he owns one Masters title from the 2016 Cincinnati Open.

CARLOS ALCARAZ

World number 16 Carlos Alcaraz comfortably beat Marton Fucsovics on Saturday to continue his searing form. The 18-year-old reached the semi-finals of Indian Wells last time out before a well-contested three-set defeat to Rafael Nadal and he won the ATP 500 Rio Open before that on clay. Alcaraz’ two ATP titles have so far come on clay but the Spaniard has more than a few similarities with the all-court prowess of his idol Nadal.

THE PREDICTION

This will be a fascinating clash between former world number three Marin Cilic and future world number one (elect) Carlos Alcaraz. The Croat won their first meeting in three sets at last season’s Estoril Open but this second encounter is likely to fall the other way. Cilic is well capable of turning it on here in conditions that suit his game but Alcaraz has lost just twice this season to Rafael Nadal and Matteo Berrettini and it is hard to see a player outside the top six best him right now. Back the youngster to win outright.
