THE PREDICTION

World number 14 Leylah Fernandez has drawn a seriously tough foe in world number 35 Liudmila Samsonova, who is probably the most dangerous unseeded player in the draw. 23-year-old Samsonova won back-to-back titles this month at the Citi Open and Cleveland Championships and she extended er winning streak to 11 matches with a comprehensive victory over Sara Bejlek on Monday. Last time the Russian won a title before a Grand Slam, the Berlin Open last summer, she reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon but Fernandez will be backed to the hilt in this clash after her incredible exploits here last season when she beat a series of former champions and top 10 players on her way to the final. The Canadian enjoyed her role as the underdog in victories against the likes of Naomi Osaka and Aryna Sabalenka last year and she will play that role once again here, with a straight-sets victory over Oceane Dodin on Monday suggesting her recently injured foot is improving.

Winning streaks are important in tennis but seemingly more so on the WTA. Back Samsonova to win this first encounter outright but at least a set would be the suitably cautious move against a great battler like Fernandez.
