THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Jessica Pegula is coming into Wimbledon with no grass-court experience this season, although the American has found the form of her career in 2022. Pegula reached back-to-back Grand Slam quarter-finals this season at the Australian Open and Roland-Garros, losing to the eventual champions of both in Ash Barty and Iga Swiatek, and she also reached a first Masters final at the Madrid Open before defeat to Ons Jabeur. A first meeting with 25-year-old Donna Vekic looks straightforward enough in paper but the former world number 19 showed brief flashes of what she is capable of in a run to the quarter-finals of the Birmingham Classic last week and she could pounce if Pegula starts slowly. Pegula has spent almost a month off the tour and little experience at Wimbledon suggests a one-off on Vekic to win at least a set could be the shrewd move here. The sensible one remains taking Pegula to win outright.
