JANNIK SINNER
World number 13 Jannik Sinner overcame a stern test by Filip Krajinovic on Thursday to win in two via a right second-set tiebreak. The 20-year-old is the last remaining Italian in either side of the draw after ousting Fabio Fognini in three sets on Wednesday night and he will enjoy a huge, partisan atmosphere on Friday against Stefanos Tsitsipas. Sinner’s five ATP titles have so far come on hardcourts but he reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in 2020 for a career-best showing at a Grand Slam that he matched this season at the Australian Open before a straight-sets defeat to Tsitsipas.
STEFANOS TSITSIPAS
World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas came back from a set down to beat Karen Khachanov comfortably enough in the end but it was another example of the Greek failing to maintain his top level on his best surface. The 23-year-old successfully defended his Monte-Carlo Open title last month but he had a real chance of reaching the Madrid Open final last week in a choppy semi-final against eventual runner-up Alexander Zverev. Tsitsipas finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic at last season’s Roland-Garros in similar circumstances after taking the first two sets against the eventual champion.
THE PREDICTION
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner will meet at the Italian Open for a third time with a win apiece in Rome so far. Tsitsipas claimed their first meeting here in 2019 for one of his three wins over the Italian but Sinner returned the favour a year later in three sets in front of jubilant home fans. Tsitsipas leads this head-to-head record 3-1 after most recently beating Sinner in the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and 2-1 on clay after winning their Barcelona Open semi-final last season. The Greek is the clear favourite to find a way through here but the Rome crowd will do their very best to irk him throughout and three sets seems a distinct possibility after his first two rounds have seen deciders. Backing Sinner to win at least a set could be the shrewd move here given the circumstances but the sensible call remains taking Tsitsipas to win outright.
