THE PREDICTION

18-year-old Jakub Mensik will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 65th after an incredible three-set upset of in-form Grigor Dimitrov on Saturday, backing-up an excellent opener over clay-court specialist Yannick Hanfmann. The Czech rising star finished runner-up to Karen Khachanov in tight straight sets at the Qatar Open in February, having stunned top players Andrey Rublev, Andy Murray, Gael Monfils and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina convincingly, but this first stint on tour-level clay is vastly impressive.

Former world number six Felix Auger-Aliassime has enjoyed a surprising respite from his recent poor hardcourt form so far this clay swing, beating Adrian Mannarino in straight sets on Saturday to bring a 5-2 record on the surface into this first encounter. The 23-year-old was once in Mensik’s shoes as a prodigal talent hotly touted for greatness but he has gained a lot of baggage since the start of 2023 where injuries hampered the confidence built in a stellar 2022. On the basis of his results so far in Madrid, back Mensik to edge through here.

TIP: JAKUB MENSIK TO WIN
