THE LOWDOWN

IGA SWIATEK

World number eight Iga Swiatek made the semi-finals of the Adelaide International last week before losing to eventual champion Ash Barty in straight sets. The 20-year-old burst onto the scene in 2020 with a storming run to the Roland-Garros title without dropping a set as a relative unknown and she won her first Masters title in Rome last year in a similarly ruthless mood. Swiatek is essentially unbeatable at her best and after a difficult 2021 season overall, despite winning two titles, we are likely to see her come back strongly in 2022.

HARRIET DART

25-year-old Harriet Dart set a career-high WTA world ranking of 120th last season after some strong late form in 2021. A victory over Leylah Fernandez at the Canadian Open looks a whole lot better this side of the US Open and she also beat then world number 366 Emma Raducanu in straight sets at the Nottingham Open last June for something of a collector’s item. The Brit’s best Grand Slam showing is a third round exit from Wimbledon in 2019.

THE PREDICTION

Seventh seed Iga Swiatek looked in imperious form at the Adelaide International but a straight-sets defeat to Ash Barty in the semi-finals is about her level right now. That is a supremely high level indeed, with only a few players on tour likely in form enough to stop her if she gets any kind of rhythm going in Melbourne. The 2020 Roland-Garros champion is at home on the clay but she is developing all the time on hardcourts and this should be a relatively straightforward win in two against a dogged competitor in Harriet Dart.
