THE PREDICTION

World number one Iga Swiatek conceded just three games to in-form Ajla Tomljanovic on Wednesday to get her Canada Masters campaign underway. The 21-year-old has been a level above the rest of the tour ever since Ash Barty retired after the Australian Open, winning six-straight tournaments in a 37-match streak that included a second Roland-Garros title and four Masters titles. However, the Pole is yet to win a title in the “second-half” of the season, namely any tournament after Roland-Garros, so far. This is highly likely to change in 2022 but recent defeats to Caroline Garcia and Alize Cornet have shown the rest of the tour that she is not totally invincible and in-form Beatriz Haddad-Maia could be a serious test here. The 26-year-old beat 13th-seed Leylah Fernandez in straight sets on Wednesday to welcome back her searing summer form that saw her win back-to-back titles in Nottingham and Birmingham. The Brazilian will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 22nd no matter the outcome here but siding against Swiatek seems a fool’s errand almost anywhere this season. Back the Pole to win in straight sets, perhaps outright inside an accumulator.
