THE PREDICTION

World number 12 Grigor Dimitrov put in his best performance this year to confound top seed Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets on Thursday, backing-up an impressive comeback over Hubert Hurkacz. The 32-year-old broke a concerning six-year title drought with victory at the Brisbane 500 back in January but defeat to Novak Djokovic at the Paris Masters final late last season displayed the still significant gulf from the very top players on tour, despite his intriguing match-up with Alcaraz. Dimitrov looks set to face the opposite problem here against world number five Zverev, who holds a very convincing 7-1 lead in their head-to-head having won each of their last seven encounters on tour. The 26-year-old has ghosted his way through to the semi-finals of the Miami Open with some assured results, yet to drop a set all fortnight after ousting up-and-coming Fabian Marozsan on Thursday, and it took eventual champion Alcaraz to stop his charge at Indian Wells last time out.

This semi-final was all about match-ups, with Alcaraz likely to beat Zverev but Zverev likely to beat Dimitrov. Back the German to win outright, with three sets about as likely as two, although three of his four wins since the start of 2023 have ended in straight sets.

TIP: ALEXANDER ZVEREV TO WIN
