World number 16 Frances Tiafoe came back from a set down to beat Max Purcell on Tuesday as he continues to seek out anything like his best form. A third-set bagel suggests he worked out some kinks against Purcell, and the notoriously raucous atmosphere in Acapulco should bolster his resolve this week, but he has won back-to-back matches on tour just twice since his gut-wrenching quarter-final exit to ben Shelton at the US Open last summer. World number 58 Dominik Koepfer overcame Terence Atmane in three sets on Tuesday, also handing his opponent a final set bagel to look ready for a tussle here. The 29-year-old worked hard on the Challenger circuit last season to repair his deflated ranking after injury and he won the Canberra Challenger last month to take some strong form back onto the ATP tour. A first meeting with Tiafoe promises to be a proper battle and with three sets likelier than two it feels suitably cautious to take the out-of-sorts American to win at least one of them in lieu of a full result.
