THE PREDICTION

23-year-old Elena Rybakina beat Jessica Pegula in straight sets to make it 11 wins in a row, 13 if you count her two before withdrawing from Dubai last month, and take her within one more of completing the rare ‘Sunshine Double’. The Kazakh will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of sixth if she can claim her second Masters title here just two weeks since storming to the Indian Wells title with remarkable wins over Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka. World number 12 Petra Kvitova is a significant threat, though, with 29 WTA titles behind her from an illustrious career. The 33-year-old has quietly enjoyed an excellent season so far with two wins over the likes of the aforementioned Jessica Pegula and an early result over Elena Rybakina at Adelaide 2, levelling their head-to-head record at 1-1. Rybakina beat Kvitova in the quarter-finals of the Ostrava Open last October to suggest she remains the favourite in the bigger moments but it is hard to count against Kvitova’s experience. However, the Kazakh is clearly the form player on the WTA tour right now and she can be backed to complete the Sunshine Double here, probably just-about in straight sets.
