THE PREDICTION
World number 38 Donna Vekic brings a two-match losing streak into the Madrid Open but she was unfortunate to draw a top clay-courter in Marketa Vondrousova at this stage of the Stuttgart Open last time out. 27-year-old Vekic is an excellent all-court threat at her best but she is certainly more effective on the faster surfaces on tour, with last summer’s fabulous run to the Berlin 500 final on grass just edged out by a perfect Petra Kvitova. World number 83 Laura Siegemund has enjoyed an excellent renaissance period on tour over the past 12 or so months and she should not be underestimated in her favoured conditions, particularly after coming through qualifying to bring some momentum. Match practice in Madrid’s unique altitude is always a huge bonus early on here and the German has enjoyed the better form on clay in recent weeks to look ready for an upset. Back Siegemund to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
