THE LOWDOWN

CAROLINE DOLEHIDE

23-year-old Caroline Dolehide did not drop a set in the Australian Open qualifiers last week to make her main draw debut here in Melbourne. The world number 200 in singles is world number 23 in doubles and part of a promising line-up alongside Australia’s Storm Sanders as the ninth seeds in that draw.

DANIELLE COLLINS

28-year-old Danielle Collins burst onto the world stage here in 2019 with a shock run to the semi-finals via wins over Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova amongst others. The world number 30’s two WTA titles came like buses, with her first coming at the Palermo Open on clay last July and her second just a week later at the Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose.

THE PREDICTION

Danielle Collins set a career-high WTA world ranking of 23rd after reaching the semi-finals here two years ago and she enjoyed her most successful year on tour since last season. The 28-year-old will have nothing but good memories to motivate her here and a fairly winnable opening fixture against her compatriot Caroline Dolehide to get her going. Dolehide will have plenty more stock in the Women’s Doubles, with Collins likely to come through in straight sets here.
