THE PREDICTION

19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz was presented the world number one trophy this week ahead of his Paris Masters opener on Wednesday. The Spaniard changed his life by winning the US Open back in September, adding a first Grand Slam title to his two Masters events for five titles won overall this season. Alcaraz is coming off a pretty chastening defeat to Felix Auger-Aliassime at last week’s Swiss Indoors, though, and this is no gimme against in-form Yoshihito Nishioka in their first meeting on tour. 27-year-old Nishioka beat Aslan Karatsev in straight sets on Monday and he will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 36th no matter the outcome here after recently claiming his second ATP title at the Korea Open. Nishioka can be a hugely frustrating player to face in his current form and with Alcaraz coming off a defeat the suitably cautious move is backing the Spaniard to win outright.
